MOSCOW – Germany must “urgently” stop using “coercive measures” against visiting Russian citizens and explain why they are confiscating Russian citizens’ private cars.
Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed this on Wednesday (12/7/2023).
The demands arose because German Customs Service staff continued the practice at the country’s borders.
“The steps taken by the German authorities go beyond even the completely illegitimate demands of the anti-Russian sanctions package,” Zakharova told the Russian journal Mezhdunarodnaya Zhizn.
Both Russian and German media previously reported that customs officers there began seizing private vehicles with Russian license plates upon their arrival in Germany.
This is sometimes done to Russian tourists traveling through Europe on their own private transport.
“We regard this development as an abuse of power against our citizens and their property,” the spokesperson said, calling the customs action a “direct consequence of Russophobia, which is widely spread by Brussels.”
German customs officials confirmed to the Berliner Zeitung newspaper that the Russian car had been seized in accordance with what they described as EU sanctions regulations.
