Germany wins historic bronze medal after furious final quarter against Canada

Böhme at the halfway point of his life

In his emotional speech shortly before the restart, coach Engel apparently found the right words.

His players now went to work full of energy, the team defended more offensively and quickly moved up on the attacking Canadians.

With a three-pointer in the middle of the quarter, Canada’s Colin Higgins made it 42:35 for the North Americans, but from then on Thomas Boehme the scepter.

With four points in a row he brought the German team to 39:42.

Canadian go-to-guy Anderson tried to hold his ground, but Böhme could no longer be stopped.

He completed a fast break shortly before the end of the quarter to make it 47:48, thus setting the tone for a memorable final quarter.

Only one team played in this one: Germany.

The first few minutes belonged to Matthias Güntner, who brought his team into the lead with six points in a row to 53:48.

The Canadians kept losing the ball and couldn’t cope with the German pressing.

Thomas Böhme, on the other hand, played the game of his life and scored from all positions, even with a three-pointer to make it 62:52.

And when the Canadians attacked him more aggressively, he took advantage of this to free up Tobias Hell, who scored to make it 64:52.

A final push by the Canadians brought the score to 64:56. But Böhme countered with two points and a spectacular steal.

Germany played the last one and a half minutes with concentration.

When Anderson left the field with 12 seconds left and the score at 62:74, the game had long been decided.

A little later, the historic success was confirmed and the German players hugged each other.
