The government currently pays compensation to Germans who have to be quarantined for at least five days after contact with an infected person or return from a high-risk country.
However, the approach will end on November 1, Span said after a meeting with health ministers in 16 federal states, announcing the government’s latest initiatives to get more Germans vaccinated.
The decision to vaccinate will continue to be a “personal decision”, but it is therefore necessary to “take responsibility for the financial consequences”.
“Some people will say that this means putting pressure on the unvaccinated. I think we need to look at it from the other side – it is also a matter of fairness,” the minister explained.
Vaccines in Germany no longer require quarantine.
In Germany, 63.4% of the population have been fully vaccinated, according to data compiled on Wednesday, well below the 85% level that should be reached according to the recommendations of the Robert Koha Institute.
As the vaccination campaign slows down, the debate over possible restrictions on the unvaccinated has intensified. However, the idea of compulsory vaccination of certain sectors of the population is currently being rejected.
Many German Länder have introduced regulations that allow restaurants and other rest areas to set limits and only accept vaccinated or sick customers.
From October, non-vaccinees will have to pay for the Covid-19 test themselves, ending the current government’s initiative to provide widely available and free tests to absolutely everyone.
In the past 24 hours, 10,454 new cases of Covid-19 have been registered in Germany, but in the past seven days, there have been 65 new cases per 100,000 people, the responsible services said on Wednesday.
