Germany: What’s changing at land border controls – ‘Need to get the situation under control’ – 2024-09-17 00:03:14

On its western and northern borders Germany checks are being extended from today for another six months, as part of the federal government’s effort to curb irregular immigration. The Minister of the Interior talks about “targeted” and “intelligent” fixed and mobile controls Nancy Feather and reassures those who express concerns about long delays at the border, while the opposition continues to call for tougher measures. Chancellor spoke of “very large number” of people arriving in Germany and “need to bring the situation under control” Olaf Solz from Uzbekistan.

As of midnight on Monday, the control regime that is already in place at the borders with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland will also apply at the borders to Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France. Anyone wishing to enter Germany by road should be prepared to present the relevant documents to the German police. Trucks and other transport vehicles will also be checked – both drivers and their cargo.

Defending the government’s decisions, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Fesser told BILD last night that Germany is not implementing arbitrary national measures that harm Europe, but is acting “in close coordination” with its neighbors. The goal, he emphasized, is “to further limit irregular immigration, to stop traffickers, to stop criminals, to identify and prevent Islamists”. Responding to those who expressed concern about long delays at the border, Mrs Fesser assured that there would be no such problems. “We will not have traffic congestion, but smart controls, as the current situation requires,” while the flow of travel and transport, business and trade will be affected as little as possible, the minister said. Thousands of people cross Germany’s borders every day, working in neighboring countries – and vice versa.

According to the interior minister, the checks will be sampled and therefore not all crossings will be checked. For such a thing, much more personnel would be needed on the part of the Federal Police, whose union has already protested the new requirements, as of today. “The Federal Police will deal with the gathering of forces” until the last moment, Federal Police Association president Andreas Roskopf warned on Saturday, speaking to RND, and explained that the minister’s announcements took even the police by surprise. “We have to be careful not to end up with a permanent overburden, as the audits will take six months or more,” Mr Roskopf said. The head of the parliamentary group of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Rolf Mützenich, even stated that even the planned additional 1,000 positions in the Federal Police will probably not be enough and asked that the issue be taken into account also in view of the passing of the new budget.

Chancellor Olaf Solz explained for his part that his government is acting “within the framework of European legislation, while making the most of its options”. “Everyone realizes that the number of people arriving in Germany is very high and it is understandable that the German government has an interest in ensuring that the situation is brought under control through good management of irregular immigration,” said Mr Scholz, who he also said that he has started “talking very carefully with the leaders of the neighboring countries and with the president of the European Commission” Ursula von der Leyen.

At the same time, the Christian Union (CDU/CSU) speaks of half measures and calls for the German border to be “completely closed” to people without the necessary documents. But this presupposes the declaration of a state of emergency, which the government has so far rejected. Nancy Feser even stated that it would be very difficult to legally prove the need for such a thing, since the first reception centers are only 50% full. Furthermore, the government should declare that the police have lost control of the situation.

The tightening of border controls has also provoked a reaction from neighboring countries, with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk calling the measures “unacceptable” and Austrian Chancellor Karl Neuhammer warning that his country will not accept anyone rejected at the German border. In contrast, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wrote on “X” “Welcome to the club!”, addressing Chancellor Olaf Solz, while in the Netherlands the leader of the ruling Party for Freedom (PVV) Geert Wilders spoke of a “good idea”. , commenting on the German announcements.
