Just 24 hours before the start of Oktoberfest, Munich’s annual beer festival, a worker died during a roller coaster test.
According to the Munich fire department, the 20-year-old was hit by a train that had developed the maximum possible speed in the test frame. It remains unclear at the moment why the unfortunate worker was on the tracks at the time.
The 20-year-old Romanian was taken to a hospital in the Bavarian capital where he succumbed to his injuries.
A spokesman for the fire department said that the tragic incident was not related to the safety of visitors who will use the roller coaster: “It was a work accident that occurred during the set-up” of the ride.
This particular roller coaster is called Olympia Looping – reminiscent of the five Olympic circles – and was presented for the first time at Oktoberfest in 1989. The total length of the route reaches 1,250 meters and the carriages develop a speed of up to 90 km/h.
In March 2022, a similar accident with a roller coaster took place in Vienna, with the victim being a 30-year-old worker. In a tragic irony, it involved the same coaster, which had then been moved to the Austrian capital’s Prater amusement park.
