Germany tops the ranking in Horizon Europe’s largest collaborative calls cluster

Providing greener solutions for a more sustainable future, innovative projects across Europe are receiving significant financial backing. A substantial portion of this funding, totaling €7.2 billion, is dedicated to Cluster 5 of Horizon Europe, a research and innovation program led by the European Commission. Emphasizing the priorities of the European Green Deal, this initiative focuses on breakthroughs in climate, energy, and mobility – sectors critical to addressing the global climate crisis.

Germany stands out as a leader in this ambitious program. The German Aerospace Centre and Fraunhofer, key institutions in German research and development, have secured 3% of the total funding allocated to Cluster 5, demonstrating the country’s commitment to innovation in these crucial areas. Overall, Germany is slated to receive an impressive €1.15 billion for projects within this cluster.

“Cluster 5 is the largest chunk of Horizon Europe’s Pillar II, with the €7.2 billion awarded surpassing all other areas,” stated a representative from the European Commission. “This is attributed to its focus on projects that contribute to the policy priority of the European Green Deal.”

A key aspect of Cluster 5’s success is its emphasis on collaborative efforts. Public-private partnerships, representing approximately 18% of the total funding, are driving innovation by bringing together theexpertise of both sectors. This approach has proven successful, with 4,347 private companies joining the 7,329 participating organizations – a clear indication of the growing interest from industry in contributing to sustainable solutions.

As the world grapples with the urgency of climate change, Europe’s commitment to investing in groundbreaking research and development offers a beacon of hope.
