At the end of August 2023, 204,461 applications for asylum were recorded in Germany – more than in any other EU country. This was reported by the German publication Bild.
It is noted that most refugees cross the border of Germany through other EU states. Foreigners are drawn to Germany because, according to the Bundestag Research Service, the amount of assistance in the country is one of the highest in Europe, although there are countries that provide larger payments.
In Germany, during the asylum procedure, a migrant is entitled to 410 euros per month (spouses – 738 euros, children under 5 years old – 278 euros): 228 euros for basic needs, including food and clothing, 182 euros for other personal needs such as payment for travel or cellular communications, the publication writes.
There are also benefits for medical care, such as dental services. However, for the first year and a half, asylum seekers receive only emergency assistance.
In France, as noted, one asylum seeker receives 426 euros per month and benefits comparable to German ones. But there is one difference: Germany continues to pay social benefits to those whose asylum claims are rejected and who need to leave the country.
In Germany, the statement of the leader of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has been discussed for several days. Friedrich Merzwho spoke in a televised debate on Welt-TV with sharp criticism of the government’s migration policy.
“Three hundred thousand applicants are denied asylum, but they do not leave, receive full benefits and full medical care. They sit at the doctor’s and get their teeth done, and nearby German citizens cannot make an appointment,” he said.
