By the order of Germany, the German defense concern Rheinmetall will supply the Luna NG unmanned aerial reconnaissance system to the Ukrainian armed forces by the end of 2023. This is reported by the German tabloid Bild, citing its own information.
The publication calls Luna NG a “super drone” that can “see and hear.” LUNA NG is an upgraded version of the Luna X-2000 drone, which has been in service with the Bundeswehr since the early 2000s. The light aircraft-type reconnaissance drone can continuously fly for 12 hours over a distance of more than 100 kilometers, with a maximum flight altitude of five thousand meters. The launch is carried out from a catapult.
The kits that are planned to be transferred to Ukraine will include a ground control station, several drones and a launch catapult.
Rheinmetall is going to release a version of a reconnaissance drone capable of carrying weapons. But for the version that will be delivered to Ukraine, this is not yet possible.
The German authorities have repeatedly provided military assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the full-scale invasion of Russian troops in Ukraine. Thus, Germany transferred Leopard tanks and Marder infantry fighting vehicles to the Ukrainian army. In addition, according to German media, the German authorities are discussing the supply of long-range Taurus missiles, but a decision has not yet been made.
