For the first time since World War II, Germany will send its troops to the Russian border. The Minister of Defense of the country, Boris Pistorius, clarified that the majority of personnel will be redeployed to Lithuania in 2025 and 2026, reports Sky News.
Pistorius compared the “historic” agreement to the deployment of Allied forces in West Germany to defend Western Europe in the event of a Soviet attack during the Cold War.
“The flank has already moved to the east and it is Germany’s responsibility to protect it,” the German minister emphasized.
According to him, most of the personnel will be redeployed to the Russian border in 2025 and 2026.
Military personnel and their families will be offered “tolerable conditions of service,” specifically German-language schools and housing.
“The speed of implementation of the project clearly shows that Germany has indeed recognized the new security threat,” Pistorius emphasized.
