The German authorities reached an agreement this Wednesday to impose a period of one month of partial confinement in Germany, a commitment that will imply the adoption of the most restrictive measures to contain the pandemic since, in the spring, the country was in total confinement.
This agreement was reached after video conference negotiations between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the leaders of the 16 German federal states, according to a source familiar with the discussion, cited by Bloomberg.
According to the broadcaster DW, which cites several German media, the partial confinement of one month will take effect next Monday, November 2. These new restrictive measures must be reassessed after two weeks in force. The details of the decisions made will be communicated today by the German Chancellor herself, at a press conference to be held this afternoon.
This morning, the Bloomberg agency had already reported that Merkel intended to propose to the heads of Länder governments the closure of bars, cafes, restaurants, gyms, cinemas, theaters, swimming pools and public parks for one month. Restaurants and cafes are expected to be closed until November 30, say Reuters and DPA.
Still with regard to commercial spaces, the new rules will allow stores to be open only and only guarantee the presence of only one customer for every 10 square meters of available space.
During the meeting held this morning, Angela Merkel also stressed the need to increase the awareness of German society about the increased risk of contagion, calling for the reduction of social contacts to the minimum and to travel only in essential circumstances.
In relation to social contacts, these should be limited to a maximum of two households up to a limit of 10 people
The British newspaper The Guardian recalls that in September, Chancellor Merkel warned that at Christmas time the country could reach 19,000 new cases of covid, a statement that led to accusations of “alarmism”. However, the data indicate that this level of contagion could be reached earlier, as this Wednesday the number of new confirmed cases reached a new record of 14,964.
The second wave of the pandemic crisis already seems to be an undeniable reality and has arrived with more force than the first. Portugal has also just registered a new maximum new infections by the new coronavirus with 3,960 cases in the last 24 hours. Given the worsening of the pandemic situation, on Saturday the Government will meet in an extraordinary council of ministers in order to approve new measures to contain the pandemic.
At a time when Spain lives again under a state of emergency, with a curfew at night, France will today announce new restrictive measures, with the Gallic press anticipating that French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to report a four-week confinement.
