Germany will host the jubilee 90th Ice Hockey World Cup in 2027. The Congress of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in Tampere decided on this on Friday. By 102 votes, the delegates gave Germany priority over Kazakhstan. The championship will be played from 14 to 30 May 2027 in Düsseldorf and Mannheim. The WC will return to Germany after ten years, the last time it was hosted in 2017 (Cologne) together with France.
“This is a milestone for the German Hockey Association. We are extremely pleased with the trust and choice of the IIHF delegates. I would like to thank everyone involved for their work in the past months, especially our IIHF project team. We look forward to organizing this important event in May 2027 an international event in the heart of Europe,” said the president of the German Hockey Association (DEB) Peter Merten.
Germany presented its offer in three time slots, moderated by former hockey player Christoph Ullmann. The cities and stadiums where the matches will be played were presented. PSD Bank Dome in Düsseldorf with a capacity of 13,284 seats and SAP Arena in Mannheim with a capacity of 13,200 seats were presented as official venues. Düsseldorf has already hosted the WC three times, in 1955, 1975 and 1983. Mannheim was the venue for the 2010 World Championship.
The Congress also decided that the Czech Republic will host the Women’s World Cup in April 2025 for the first time in its history. In this way, two championships will be held in the Czech Republic, the year before that there is a men’s tournament in Prague and Ostrava. The venue of the women’s tournament is not yet known. Czech women’s ice hockey players made their first appearance at the Beijing Olympics last year and took the final 7th place. In the same year, they won a historic bronze medal at the World Championships in Denmark, which they defended in 2023 at the championship in Canada.
