BERLIN – Germany will not get involved in the Ukrainian conflict, but will continue to supply Kiev with armaments, according to Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
The comments came amid public discussions about whether Berlin should supply Kiev with the long-range Taurus missiles.
Speaking at an event organized by the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper on Friday, Scholz was asked whether there was any danger of Germany becoming “actively involved in the war.”
He responded saying it was his “purpose to prevent this”, and this is why “there are no German soldiers in Ukraine and there won’t be”.
However, the chancellor said Berlin would continue to supply arms to Ukraine. He added that any decision in this regard had been taken carefully and in coordination with allies.
According to Scholz, the West does not want the conflict to develop into “a war between Russia and NATO”.
Earlier this month, Ukrainian MP Egor Chernev said many of his German counterparts supported giving Kiev the Taurus missile, which has a range of about 500 km.
Chernev claimed a broad consensus on the matter had been reached among Germany’s political parties, and that Ukraine was awaiting an official decision.
