Germany: The release of Vadim Krasikov in the context of the exchange of prisoners causes reactions in the country – 2024-08-03 20:00:00

The Frankfurter Allgemeine talks about dissatisfaction in the circles of the Federal General Prosecutor’s Office in Karlsruhe after the release of Vadim Krasikov, also known as the “Tiergarten killer”, who was serving a life sentence for the murder of the Georgian dissident of Chechen origin, Selimkhan Kangoshvili Zeitung, while “mixed” feelings of disappointment and understanding are expressed by the victim’s family. Justice Minister Marco Busman spoke of “bitter concessions”.

FAZ also notes that, according to its own information, Mr. Bushman played an important role in the exchange agreement, as he was the one who instructed the General Prosecutor not to continue the execution of Krasikov’s sentence, causing the displeasure of the Prosecutor’s Office, mainly because this decision “does not take into account the relatives of the murdered”. Mr. Busman himself justified his decision by pointing out that concessions had to be made for the freedom of the prisoners: “As Minister of Justice I am responsible for a particularly bitter concession. But without this step, the 16 people would not have been released. They would continue to be in Putin’s terrorist prison and would be in serious danger to their lives,” he said. The newspaper reports that the minister has given a written order to federal prosecutor-general Jens Rommel, who was appointed only in March, to “refrain from imposing further sentences” in order to prepare the deportation to Russia. On the part of the Prosecutor’s Office, according to FAZ, it is believed that “it is wrong when politicians interfere so drastically with justice”. It is even mentioned that the “correct way” would have been for the federal president Frank-Walter Steinmeier to have pardoned Kraskov.

The victim’s brother, Zurab Kangosvili, speaking to BILD, expressed his surprise and disappointment at the release of his brother’s killer and clarified that his family had not been informed beforehand. “Now my brother’s killer is walking free. We feel humiliated. His children are orphans, I lost my beloved brother, and the murderer can hug his family. This hurts,” said Mr. Kangosvili, but at the same time expressed satisfaction and relief that some people were released from Russian prisons. “But they should have asked us first. I would agree if I knew that many prisoners were being released from Putin’s captivity,” he added.
