Germany: The attack on Asafenburg changes everything in the election campaign –

Early elections in Germany were announced on the occasion of the inability to consult government partners in terms of fiscal policy. “It’s no longer the end of the world,” federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier reassured.

Four weeks before the ballots are opened, however, the surrounding atmosphere is really reminiscent of the … end of the (German) world as we knew it.

The migratory – with its tragic aspects – monopolizes the public dialogue and the “Chancellor in Awaiting”, as Friedrich Mertz (CDU) is often described, made the decision to move high -risk. “I play everything for everything,” he recognized.

The attack of 28 -year -old Afghan O. against children at a nursery in Asafenburg, Bavaria, resulting in the tragic death of a 2 -year -old boy and a 41 -year -old man who tried to prevent the perpetrator, changed everything in the pre -election confrontation.

The case is described in terms such as yet another barbaric crime by another alien who was illegally in the country, “lost” by the competent services.

German society is looking numb and at least a quarter of citizens is said to have decided that the “solution” to the problem is the far -right vote.

In the face of the deadlock, the leader of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) and candidate Chancellor Friedrich Mertz decided to change the game, announcing a radical change in immigration and asylum policy – will submit it to the federal parliament. Whoever wants ”: even AfD.

“Enough! We are confronted with a disaster, with the ruins of decade of incorrect immigration policy, “Mr Mertz said days ago.

His proposal provides for a de facto prohibition of entry for anyone who cannot show a passport or visa, even if it is under protection -with no exceptions -and the abolition of family reunification.

“The current regulations of the European Union are clearly dysfunctional and Germany must be protected (…) we must use our right to the supremacy of national law,” he explained, attempting to prejudice criticism of violating European regulations.

The CDU leader added that the federal state would grant real estate, in particular empty camps, to convert to detention centers under expulsion of immigrants. In other words, “those who are to be deported will not be allowed to move freely within Germany.”

Looking at Washington and the presidential executive decrees of the first hours of Donald Trump’s 2nd Presidency, Friedrich Mertz pledged all this to become a “first day of his term” in the Chancellor.

Citing the urgent nature of the case, the next day he announced that his party’s proposals will already be submitted in the coming days by the Christian Union (CDU/CSU) as a draft law in the Bundestag.

As expected, Chancellor Olf Saltz (SPD) rejected the suggestion, referring to unconstitutional proposals and accusing his opponent of a far -right turn.

“I always believed Friedrich Mertz’s assurances of the ‘Wall of Protection’. Now what can I believe? “, Mr. Saltz said at a pre-election rally, implying that Vienna eventually is very close to Berlin, and the Austrians, who are heading for the far-right (FPö)-Central Right (ÖVP). They paved the way, demolishing their own “Wall of Protection”.

In the same vein, the leader of the Greens Franciska Bratner expressed “significant doubts” about “how stable” is ultimately the infamous “wall” for the CDU, talking about “requests that are incompatible with European law and the current constitutional law of Germany. “

The Zeit newspaper spoke of a “break” by Friedrich Mertz, also reacted inside the CDU.

As “the wolf is enjoying the lupus”, the AfD does not even try to hide its enthusiasm.

“The ‘Wall of Protection’ fell. The opportunity for the next week of Bundestag meetings should not be missed, ”the… Lycana, the leader of AfD Alice Videl, judged by X, directly in favor of cooperation with the CDU, pre -election and post -election, to form a government.

Most likely, it is that Mr Mertz does not want-he does not want-the AfD MPs will not miss the opportunity to “expose” the Christian Democrats, voting for the law proposal.

Their votes, of course, would not be enough today, it would still be needed to support the Liberals (FDPs) and the Alliance of Zara Wagenknecht (BSW) to secure a majority.

It is not only possible that exactly that will happen.

“This would mean the end of the ‘protection wall’ against the enemies of our democracy,” commented the head of the Social Democratic Party Rolf Mutsenich. In the face of the risk of charging the CDU, Friedrich Mertz made it clear yesterday in his pre -election speech that the parliamentary proposal would only be sent to the SPD, the Greens and the FDP and in any case not to the AfD.

“We do not negotiate either with AfD or BSW. The parties of the center must take responsibility. This is the best solution over political limbs on the right and left. Something has to be done now, “Mr Mertz said. “We can’t do anything about who will vote for our proposal,” they sewed in the meantime of his party.

The concern that first and foremost expresses the SPD has more to do with the possibility that the CDU winks at AfD – less with the substance of the measures.

“Friedrich Mertz’s – unlawful – plans to reject everyone on the border are axes on the foundations of European integration and are sure to be overthrown in the courts,” SPD Vice -President Dirk Visé said, ” CDU on everything else. The SPD is also expected to submit its own proposal to further tighten the asylum system.

However, according to Hans-Yurgen Papier, a former president of the Federal Constitutional Court until 2010, the CDU’s plans “are not only possible but also necessary”. Immigrants from countries of origin who are considered safe should be prohibited from entering, the judge told Bild. “We are surrounded by EU states and Switzerland – all of which are safe third countries. I find it unacceptable the current practice, which essentially gives access to anyone who pronounces the word ‘asylum’. “

The plans “are not unconstitutional”, bidders the constitutionalist Rupert Saltz, who argued that “according to the German constitution and European law, asylum cessation is completely acceptable. If the people or state are at risk, Germany may suspend entry entirely or for certain countries of origin. ” And, if there is a risk of crimes or terrorism, Germany “has an obligation to slow down migration”.

The problem in Germany is unquestionable. The incorporation of immigrants who have arrived in the country over the last decade has proven to be a particularly difficult task, it is considered to be largely failed.

Friedrich Mertz is therefore finding another opportunity to rupture with the policy pursued by former Chancellor Angela Merkel, and possibly a rupture with the hitherto axiom that the democratic parties have wanted not to cooperate at any level with the AfD.

The profits or losses of his strategy remain to be judged in the polls.
