Atlanta, USA (CNN) – The German and Israeli governments signed a “historic” agreement Thursday to supply Germany with the Israeli-made “Arrow 3” missile defense system, which will become a major part of Europe’s defense against any air attack.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius told reporters in a joint press conference with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant in Berlin that the signing of the agreement, which is the largest in the history of Israel and its defense industry, was “a historic day for both countries.”
Pistorius stressed that the “Arrow 3” system aims to provide better protection for Germany and its neighbors against any potential missile attacks. This system is designed to intercept ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere, allowing interception operations at high altitudes above the atmosphere.
Pistorius said: “Russian daily attacks on Ukraine show us what air defense means.”
The German Defense Minister added, “Defense is essential, especially here in central Europe,” and added, “Israel makes important contributions to our security in Germany and Europe.”
The first batch of Arrow 3 systems is expected to arrive and enter service in 2025, according to Pistorius.
For his part, the Israeli Defense Minister said: “With two simple signatures today, we are making history.”
Gallant added: “The Arrow 3 deal signed today is the largest for Germany, and we are committed to delivering it in the appropriate time and with the necessary effectiveness.”
The Israeli Defense Minister concluded by saying that the agreement is an indication of the strengthening of special relations between Germany and Israel.
Last month, the United States approved Israel’s request to sell the Arrow 3 missile system to Germany.
It is noteworthy that Israel and the United States have been working together to develop the “Arrow” missile defense system, which costs billions of dollars, since 1986.
