What is novitsjok?
Novitsjok, literally “newcomer” in Russian, is a very dangerous neurotoxin which was developed in the 70s and 80s in the Soviet Union as a chemical weapon. The product can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, and skin contact. It causes muscles to go into overdrive, which can cause the heart and lungs to fail. Ultimately, that can lead to death.
Novitsjok is also the matter that the Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter were poisoned in England in 2018. They barely survived that.
