His candidacy for the anointing of the Greens, in order to head the pre-election campaign in the upcoming elections, was announced on Friday 8/11 by Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy Robert Hambeck.
“I am running for the anointing of the Greens – for the people in Germany. And, if you want it, also for chancellor. But this is not my decision, but yours. Only you can decide,” said Mr Hambeck in the eight-minute video he released ahead of the Greens’ conference, which will take place next week in Wiesbaden and, unexpectedly, will also officially anoint the vice-chancellor. . So far, there doesn’t seem to be another candidate.
“I know that the governing coalition has failed. I know that the trust has been broken”, said Mr. Hambek in the relevant video and emphasized that in the next period he wants to listen to the citizens about the issues that concern them.
Speculation that Habeck would soon announce his candidacy had been rife since Thursday, 7/11, when he returned to social media platform X after a five-year hiatus, posting a short video in which he appears to be wearing a bracelet the words “chancellor era” are inscribed.

The Greens, along with their coalition partners the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Free Democratic Party (FDP), have seen their popularity plummet as part of a governing coalition that this week collapsed in spectacular fashion.
Just 14% of the German public was satisfied with the government as of October this year, the lowest rating for a government in Germany in decades.
