RoyaltyIn Thailand he was already spit out by part of the population, but Thai King Vajiralongkorn (60) – better known as King Rama X – is now also embarrassed in Germany. The German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas, stated in parliament that it is impossible for the monarch to perform his royal duties from Germany. A response that comes after months of constant protest against Vajiralongkorn’s stay in a luxury hotel.

“We have made it clear that Thailand policy cannot be conducted from German soil,” the German Foreign Minister said in Parliament. “If there are guests in our country who handle state affairs from our territory, then we will always act to counter that.

Member of Parliament Frithjof Schmidt then asked whether the European Union would suspend diplomatic ties with Thailand, because the Thai regime would do everything it could to undermine democracy. The German Foreign Minister does not rule out sanctions, although he says that the EU wants to enter into a dialogue with the Thai government before any measures are taken.

Constant protest
The minister’s response comes after continuous protests against Vajiralongkorn, both in Thailand and Germany. Thousands of protesters recently took to the streets of Bangkok to protest against the government and royalty. According to an estimate by the police, there were about 5,000 people on the move. “The land belongs to the people, not the king’s,” they cried. The leaders of the protest had, in a letter addressed to the palace, called for reforming the monarchy, forming a new government and rewriting the constitution.

‘Criminal King’
Not everyone in Germany is happy with Vajiralongkorn either. Several demonstrations took place because the king should perform his royal duties in his own country. This happened for the luxury hotel Sonnenbichl in the Bavarian winter sports resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the current residence of the monarch. Slides with texts in Thai, English and German were projected on the facade of the hotel. “Why does Thailand need a king who lives in Germany,” said one of the slogans projected with images of the king. Another message was that “Thailand’s capital is no longer Bangkok but Munich” and there was also an appeal to the “criminal king” to stop the torture of Thai civilians.

The slides were later also shown at the town hall, because the action group wants to get support for a petition asking the town council to deprive the king and his large group of the residence permit. “It is not only the Thai who suffer from King Vajiralongkorn. He is also a burden on German taxpayers because the state has to pay for his safety and protection, ”the activists said in a statement. “He commits human rights violations on German soil: he smuggles and abuses women and mistreats his staff who he treats like slaves. Germans should not tolerate this in their country. ”
