Germany reports nearly 500 deaths from COVID-19 in 24 hours | Germany Today | DW

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported this Friday (12.10.2021) a total of 61,288 new infections by SARS-CoV-2 in Germany, as well as a slight decrease in the incidence of cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which this day reached 413.7 (422.3 on Thursday). Likewise, an upward trend in the number of deaths was confirmed, which this time was 484 people, compared to the 390 reported last Friday.

Although the figures for new infections appear to be decreasing, experts warn that it should be taken into account that in different regions of Germany, due to the saturation of health systems and the practical inability of personnel to carry out all their tasks due to the high number of patients With COVID-19, new cases are not being reported on time, so it is reasonable to think that there is an underestimation of daily positives.

The RKI assures that since the beginning of the pandemic 6,423,520 people have tested positive for PCR, although it is considered a fact that the total number of infections is higher, since many cases are not officially reported. Similarly, the Institute considers that 5,329,300 people have already overcome the disease. The total number of deaths from COVID-19 reached 104,996.

No jail, but with a fine

Another number that the authorities are closely monitoring is that of COVID-19 patients admitted to medical centers. This figure reached 5.75 per 100,000 inhabitants this day. Despite the enormous number of infections that Germany registers, the number of patients has not reached the levels of December 2020 (when it reached 15 per 100,000 inhabitants) thanks largely to the vaccination campaign, which began in the country with force only in January 2021.

Regarding this issue, the new Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach, said in an interview with the weekly The mirror that it is not foreseen to punish with jail those who do not get vaccinated, although the fines are being considered. “No one will go to jail, but fines are unavoidable.” Lauterbach said there will be discussions with psychologists and economists to see when is the best time to impose this penalty.
