Germany Plans Vaccine Booster for the Elderly

JAKARTA – Starting September 1, Germany plans to add a booster vaccine or a third dose of vaccine for the elderly. Reported by AFP, Monday (2/8/2021) this was done, because it considered that the elderly were vulnerable or had a high risk of being exposed to Covid-19.

The plan has also been included in a draft regulation that will be approved and discussed by German Health Minister Jens Spahn and 16 regional health ministries in the federal state today Monday (2/8/3021).

Later, a mobile vaccination team will be sent to a nursing home or elderly care center to offer a booster–Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna–as a vaccine booster. In fact, the doctors on duty will also pay attention to the appropriateness of the targets who pass the vaccine booster.

In addition, the draft that regulates the implementation of the booster also refers to a number of studies which state that vaccine protection fades over time, so it is important for vulnerable people to get a third dose of injection.

Although Germany currently enjoys a relatively low infection rate compared to its neighbours, there are concerns about a spike in transmission of new variants, particularly Delta.

There are even concerns about a slowdown in the country’s vaccination rate, with just over 52 percent of the population being given a complete two-dose injection. (E-4)
