Germany Penalized for Rule Violation in Women’s Chase Start at DAVOS – Coach Fined and Accreditation Revoked

DAVOS. Germany is penalized after the women’s chase start.

Coach Peter Schlickenrieder helped skiers scrape snow off their skis.

– It’s my fault, says the German.

Sweden’s Lisa Ingesson finished last of all in Thursday’s chaotic Tour de Ski race.

She was one of many skiers who chose to ride with fästvalla and thus had problems with snow getting stuck under the skis at the start of the race.

– I noticed quite early on that this is not good. I must have shouted five times during the race “can I break?”. “No, don’t interrupt!” they answered, but I drove around and looked at the environment a bit, says Ingesson after the race.

Used credit card

She got help along the way with scraping away snow and slush.

– It froze a lot and I got a credit card from a manager who said “scratch with this”. So I stopped and scraped under the skis, says Ingesson.

– It was from our physio, Johan. I then returned the card, but it was a bit difficult to scratch with it.

Ingesson did the actual scraping himself, which is allowed. For Germany, however, the competition has consequences.

Germany is fined

Coach Peter Schlickenrieder broke the rules when he himself helped his skaters and scraped off their skis with a ski he had with him.

Some of the German riders knew about the rule and waved Schlickenrieder off, but he himself did not.

– They are punishing me and took away my accreditation for the rest of the tour. I’m not allowed to coach. They told the riders that it must not happen again and fined us 1,000 Swiss francs (roughly SEK 12,000), which is tough for us because we want to put all the money on the riders, says Schlickenrieder.

He still accepts the sentence from the jury.

– It’s my fault.

Must not stay

How come you didn’t know the rules?

– I think the rules are around two hundred pages and they change ten thousand things every spring. Sometimes it’s tough to study all the rules. Our main task is to coach and help the riders.

Now Schlickenrieder will watch television for the rest of the Tour de Ski.

– It will be a challenge for our team. Two coaches have already gone home due to illness, but the skaters still do a very good job, he says.
