The new laws come in the wake of a heated debate about the pros and cons of easier access to the drug.
The government argues that decriminalization will crack down on the underground market and reduce the spread of tainted cannabis, thereby protecting young people. However, there were also critical comments about the passing of the law, regarding the possible impact on young people.

What does the new law provide?
Under the new legislation, adults over the age of 18 will be allowed to carry up to 25 grams of cannabis for their own consumption. It will remain prohibited for minors, while certain safeguards are in place to protect young people.
In particular, public consumption will be allowed, as long as it is not carried out in visual contact with children or near sports facilities.
Adults will also be able to store up to 50 grams at home, as well as own up to three plants for home cultivation.
Specialty cannabis clubs will be allowed to grow and buy the product on a limited basis from July 1. Clubs can have up to 500 members.
