The proposed plan is a step forward for a landmark reform project from Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition of social liberals.
Germany is set to approve a plan to legalize the personal use of cannabis, which could allow adults to possess up to 25g of the drug and grow up to three plants for personal use.
Announcement
The Council of Ministers will vote today, Wednesday, on the proposed plan, and if approved, it will require a study in Parliament before it is approved.
If the plan reaches legislation, cannabis will be allowed to be grown and sold by “cannabis clubs” to its members for recreational purposes.
The proposed plan is a step forward for a landmark reform project from Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition of social liberals.
Officials hope the legislation will help counter the black market, protect consumers from tainted products and reduce drug-related crime.
But the plan faces opposition from several quarters, particularly from the legal authorities.
The centre-right opposition believes the government is pushing ahead with legalizing the risky substance despite European legal hurdles and expert opinion.
An organization representing German judges said the proposed law was likely to overburden the judicial system rather than lighten it.
