Germany is in big trouble due to the shortage of gas supplies from Russia. Quoted from Reuters, Germany is currently on the verge of an energy crisis due to the gas cut.
Indeed, Western countries such as the European Union imposed sanctions on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. Germany is actually one of the countries that depend on Russian gas.
With gas supplies becoming increasingly difficult, Germany could enter the brink of recession. Especially if the gas is really stopped by the country led by President Vladimir Putin.
German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said if the restrictions on gas supply was an attack that Russia intensified for Germany.
“Now, gas is scarce in Germany. Therefore, people have to reduce gas consumption, especially now that summer is coming,” Habeck said, quoted by Reuters, Friday (24/6/2022).
The Russian side denied stopping gas supplies suddenly.
Germany is currently providing funding of US$ 15.76 billion for storing gas supplies and holding a gas auction this summer. However, it still asks users to save gas.
Habeck said that gas supply and prices will not return to normal in the future. “If this condition does not improve, then the entire market will experience shocks like the Lehman Brothers effect but in the energy sector,” he explained.
In the first quarter of 2022 Germany has imported 22% of natural gas. However, the costs incurred increased by 170% compared to the same period.
