The German national team held a special promotion today at the World Cup in Qatar. Before the match against Japan, Bundesteam players covered their mouths with their hands in a team photo.
Recall that FIFA had previously banned Germany and other teams from wearing One Love anti-discrimination armbands, threatening to punish the player with her yellow card.
“We wanted to use our captaincy to defend the values we uphold in the German national team: diversity and mutual respect. Together with other nations, we wanted our voice to be heard.
It was not a political statement: human rights are not negotiable. This should be taken for granted, but it still isn’t. That’s why this message is so important to us. Denying us a blindfold is like denying us a voice. We stand by our position,” the German Football Association said in a statement.
