Germany is preparing to restore compulsory military service

“But in Berlin, which is almost 300 miles from the nearest Russian borders, there is not the sense of immediate threat that prevails in the Scandinavian and Baltic countries. One recent poll showed that 52% of voters support some form of conscription renewal, while 43% are against it,” the publication said.

The authors of the article note that this idea is more popular among people over 60, including many older men who have memories of military service during the Cold War. However, among young people under the age of 30, 59% are against this concept in principle.

“Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is one of those who once refused military service because of his beliefs. As a radical left-wing youth and a staunch skeptic, in 1984 he decided to do his national service not in the armed forces, but in a nursing home. He also said that returning to military service was “not a good idea,” media reported.

At the beginning of March, the magazine “Der Spiegel” reported on the possible restoration of compulsory military service in Germany. According to Der Spiegel, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has already ordered the development of models for such a service.

Pistorius wants to create a model of military service in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) that promotes “overall social sustainability”. Sweden would be taken as a model for this.
