Over the next few years, Germany will invest billions to expand the charging network for electric cars. 6.3 billion euros will be invested over the next three years.

The number of electric vehicles in the country is growing at an annual rate of nearly 25%. Currently, 14.6% of all newly registered cars in Germany are electric, according to data from Germany’s RDW.

“We are a leading automotive country in the world. That is why it is important for us to be prepared,” says Transport Minister Wissing. “We expect an exponential increase in electric vehicles in the coming years and we should be ready for it.”

According to the ministry, there are around 70,000 charging points in the country, of which 11,000 are fast chargers. This is not enough to meet current needs.

The German government’s goal is to have 1 million public charging points available by 2030.
