The German government does not believe that there are grounds to pass this evidence directly to Russia, said Martin Fitz, the government’s deputy press secretary.

“We continue to call on the Russian side to provide information,” she added.

The Navalny poisoning violated international law banning the use of chemical weapons, Fitz said, noting that the issue was not just a matter of disagreement between Berlin and Moscow.

The transfer of the test specimens to the OPCW, of which Russia is a member, was also confirmed by the German Ministry of Defense.

The Russian government denies any involvement in Navalny’s health crisis and has so far refused to prosecute allegations that Navalny has been poisoned.

German Ambassador to Russia Géza Andreas von Geir visited the Russian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, September 9, to discuss the dispute, the German embassy in Moscow said.

According to Maria Zakharov, the press secretary of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moscow hopes that Germany will provide sufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations that Navalny has been poisoned by the chemical weapon “Novichok” developed by the USSR.

On August 20, Navalni was unconsciously taken to Omsk Hospital in Siberia with signs of poisoning, but two days later he was transferred from Russia to Germany, where he was treated at the Charite clinic at the University of Berlin.

As the German government said on September 2, there is incontrovertible evidence that Navalny has been poisoned by a nerve-paralyzing warfare substance belonging to the Novichok group.

On Monday, Navalny was awakened from a medical coma and he responds to verbal stimuli.
