Makeyev said new supplies of weapons and ammunition were promised in direct talks, but did not disclose which weapons would be delivered.
The ambassador said he did not want to put diplomatic pressure on Germany, but still called on Germany to hurry up, because Ukraine has no time to wait for weapons.
Air defense systems, howitzers and ammunition are urgently needed on the front lines, Makeev said in an interview published on Sunday.
“Besides, it’s still being talked about [kājnieku kaujas mašīnu] Delivery of “Marder” and “Leopard” tanks. However, the decision on this is made by the German government,” the ambassador said.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has so far refused the delivery of “Leopard 2” tanks to Ukraine.
The United States made clear on Friday that it sees no obstacles to supplying tanks to Ukraine, but that the decision must be made by Germany.
Makeyev revealed in an interview with “Welt am Sonntag” that the German government had promised him that there would be no negotiations with Russia without Ukraine’s consent.
Currently Ukraine does not need mediators, but allies, he added.
“Peace in Ukraine cannot be negotiated, it must be fought for. When the chancellor says he will help Ukraine as long as it needs to, he means until the last Russian soldier is gone from our land – including Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea – and reparations are paid and war criminals have been convicted,” Makeyev said.
Makeyev became Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany about six weeks ago, succeeding Andrii Melnyk, who became Ukraine’s deputy foreign minister.
