Germany announced the conclusion of a long-term agreement with Qatar on the supply of liquefied natural gas, against the background of Berlin’s search for alternative energy suppliers for Russia.

According to Financial Timesin Doha, as part of a tour to the Persian Gulf, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said that the agreement would reduce Berlin’s dependence on Russian gas, which now accounts for more than half of annual supplies.

He declined to give details about the volume of gas and other terms of supply.

The Ministry of Economy said that individual German energy companies, whose leaders accompanied Habek on a trip to Qatar, should sign agreements with enterprises in the Arab state.

“We will still need Russian gas this year, but not in the future,” Khabek said.

“It all starts like this – so whoever has ears should start listening,” he added in a veiled address to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
