In Germany today, January 8, a large-scale strike of farmers and everyone related to the industry began. These are transport workers, logistics workers, the food industry, as well as their trade unions.
Protesters demand lower taxes, higher wages, increased subsidies and a reduction in food taxes from 19% to 7%. Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised that there would be no increase, but from January 1, 2024 the tax was increased.
During the protests, drivers of all public transport will not work, and trucks and tractors will block highways. Doctors, teachers, and builders are expected to join.
It is already known that hundreds of tractors are blocking roads. There are posters attached to the equipment: “There is no future without farmers”, “We are not striving to receive 20 salaries more, we are fighting for our existence. We are for German agriculture” and “Carry on! Otherwise, we will soon be swallowed up by bankruptcy.”
Some farmers arrived with trailers of manure, dumping it on city streets. The police are monitoring the protests that have begun; service vehicles are parked next to the tractors. Large events take place in Munich, Hamburg, and Wiesbaden. Some schools in Bavaria will switch to remote learning.
