Germany extends lockdown until March 7, schools and hairdressing salons are allowed to open | NOW

Germany is extending the lockdown until March 7, Chancellor Angela Merkel decided on Wednesday in consultation with the federal states. Schools will soon be allowed to open their doors and hairdressing salons on March 1.

A lockdown has been in force in Germany for months to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Schools and non-essential stores are currently closed.

The number of new positive tests now seems to be increasing less rapidly, but drivers are concerned about the spread of new variants of the corona virus. Merkel says a third wave must be avoided.

Contrary to some federal states, the chancellor does not think it is a good plan to immediately have schools teach physically. But the federal states themselves have a lot to say about education and some have already announced that they want to open the schools as soon as possible.

The federal states want to offer the children and their parents perspective. Some states, such as Berlin, are aiming for a reopening on Monday, February 22.
