Germany: Election on 23 February 2025 –

On February 23, 2025, early elections will be held in Germany, according to the German Press Agency DPA, which cites sources from the two largest parties, the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Christian Democrats (CDU).

However, the official decision will have to be taken by the Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The chancellor, Olaf Solz, is likely to ask for a vote of confidence before January 15. According to Germany’s Bild, the most likely date is December 18, six days before Christmas.

Until then, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Greens will continue to govern together as a minority government. This will happen with the tolerance probably of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU). In order to pass crucial pension and industry support bills by the end of the year.

The vote of the deputies will take place two days after the submission of the proposal.

The Chronicle of the “Fall”

It is recalled that Chancellor Olaf Scholz relieved of his duties the Minister of Finance and leader of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) Christian Lindner, a partner of the German government.

Mr Lindner had suggested to Mr Soltz that he go ahead with early elections in early 2025, which the chancellor had rejected. The FDP leader is reported to have argued that there is no longer common ground between the government partners in order to achieve a meaningful economic recovery.

According to BILD, Olaf Solz “caught up” with the FDP leader, who had planned to leave the governing committee. He wanted to end the coalition agreement with the SPD and the Greens. Then he thought of withdrawing his ministers. “Everything was prepared“, the newspaper reports.
