Germany does not need Nord Stream 2 – German analysts

The Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 is not needed by Germany. Blue fuel is already being supplied from other countries: the Netherlands, Great Britain, Norway, North Africa. In addition, there are already several gas pipelines from Russia, and the United States plans to supply liquefied gas.

This was stated by energy experts from DIW Franziska Holz and Claudia Kemfert, as well as an expert from the Institute for German Economics in Cologne (IW) Thilo Schaefer. Even some supporters of gas as a transition technology do not see the need for a new pipeline, the German newspaper writes. DW.

The European Union and Germany are able to satisfy their needs for natural gas at any time; additional pipelines are not required for this, analysts say. They refer to existing sources of gas supplies. “Nord Stream 2” is not needed, “says Thilo Schaefer.

To achieve Germany’s climate goals, it is necessary to halve the share of gas in the energy balance by 2030, and completely abandon it by 2040. For such a radical restructuring in the energy sector, the EU will need, however, about three trillion euros, but two of them, according to the DIW, can be found by reducing imports of oil and gas.

The Nord Stream 2 project is estimated at 9.5 billion euros. It is being implemented by Gazprom in an alliance with European companies Engie, Uniper, OMV, Shell, Wintershall. They pledged to finance Nord Stream 2 in total by 50%, that is, 950 million euros each. Gazprom will provide the second half of the funds – 4.75 billion euros.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the gas pipeline must be put into operation at the beginning of 2021. However, later the dates were postponed to the end of the year.

As previously reported OBOZREVATEL, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and his Polish counterpart Zbigniew Rau publicly addressed the US President Joe Biden with the request stop the construction of Nord Stream 2 using any tools.
