Germany divided over Afghan refugees

46 percent of those polled in a YouGov poll last week say they are opposed to taking in large numbers of refugees from Afghanistan, while 47 percent are in favor.

But three-quarters of those who are in favor of giving Afghans protection believe Germany should accept them only if other EU countries do the same. Only 22 percent think Germany should give them protection anyway.

At a meeting on Tuesday, EU interior ministers failed to agree on a common position on Afghans fleeing the Taliban.

Some countries, such as Austria, the Czech Republic and Denmark, insist that aid should only be provided to refugees in the vicinity of Afghanistan, not in Europe. They fear a repeat of 2015 when large numbers of Syrians came to Europe.
