This incident, which also caused a wounded, is being investigated by the German prosecutor’s anti-terrorism unit as a potential terrorist act, a judicial source quoted by the France-Press agency (AFP) said today.
“Islamic terror is a permanent threat, which we must combat with the greatest possible coherence,” said German Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht, on the social network Twitter, while the Interior Minister in the German executive, Horst Seehofer, considered that the incident in question “demonstrates once again the dangerous nature of Islamic violence” which “requires maximum vigilance”.
According to a spokesman for the German Public Prosecutor’s Office, the incident that took place in Dresden on 4 October is currently being investigated by the Karlsruhe prosecutor, who has competence in the area of combating terrorism.
The court suspects “an act with Islamic motives”, the Dresden prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
A 53-year-old German tourist from the German city of Cologne was stabbed to death, while another 55-year-old German citizen was injured.
A 20-year-old Syrian man is suspected of stabbing and was arrested on Tuesday.
According to the Public Ministry, the suspect has already been convicted on other occasions for acts of violence and for having acted as a recruiter of support for “a terrorist organization”.
The suspect, who served several prison terms, had been released on September 29, just days before the events in Dresden.
When questioned by investigators, the suspect made no statement, the prosecutor’s statement specified.
According to the German media, the suspect’s DNA was found in the kitchen knife that was used in the attack, an indication that led to the arrest of the Syrian man.
