Germany decides on NATO membership of Finland and Sweden

The leaders of Germany, Finland and Sweden met at the Meseberg Palace near Berlin. The two-day meeting of the delegations of the three states was intended, in particular, to determine the course regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“If these two countries decide they should join NATO, they can count on our support,” Scholz said. The chancellor also added that no one can guarantee that Russia will not attack other countries.

Neutral for decades, Finland and Sweden are seriously considering joining the North Atlantic Alliance after the Russian attack on Ukraine. The parliaments of both countries are debating on the application for NATO membership as early as May.
