Germany: Controls at all borders from 16/9 – The reason – 2024-09-10 06:27:04

Temporary controls at all German borders from September 16 and for six months wants the federal government to impose, under the burden of “the threat to internal security from Islamic terrorism and cross-border crime,” German media reported, citing government sources.

According to the report of the first channel of the German public television ARD, controls are already being carried out at the southern and eastern borders of Germany, while the measure concerns “rejections at the border, which will be in line with European law”.

The German news agency dpa also reports that the additional controls are scheduled to come into effect next Monday and initially last for six months.

Following the immigration policy meeting held last week with the participation of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU), the government “has developed a model for efficient border rejectionsin accordance with European legislation”.

This model, it is pointed out, allows more rejections than what was done until now.

As ARD reports, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Fesser (SPD) communicated her plans to the parliamentary group of the Christian Union (CDU/CSU), which has been pushing for the measure, especially after the Solingen attack, and suggested they take place “very soon » confidential talks between the federal government, opposition and states on the issue. The meeting cannot be ruled out as early as tomorrow.

To date, a migrant has only been turned away at the German land border if someone has been banned from entry or does not apply for asylum.

In October 2023, border controls with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland were imposed, while similar controls have been in place for the German-Austrian border since 2015. The model now proposed was recently implemented during the European Football Championship.
