Germany commemorates the historic events of November 9 / Article

Senior state officials gathered for an event dedicated to three major events, all of which took place on November 9th. On this date, the Republic of Germany was proclaimed after the fall of the monarchy in 1918, the fall of the Berlin Wall began in 1989, and one of the darkest pages in German history in 1938, the so-called Crystal Night, when the Nazis burned synagogues, destroyed Jewish shops and houses, and killed dozens of people.

“9. November is not only an important day, it is a light and dark day. It makes both our hearts beat and tears in our eyes. It makes us hope for the good that is in our country, and it drives us to despair over our abyss. Maybe that’s why November 9 is a very German day – a day that provides information about our country like no other, “said German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

There was a previous proposal to introduce a National Remembrance Day in Germany on November 9 to commemorate both the devastation of the Jews of 1938 and the fall of the Berlin Wall. However, the German Central Council of Jews has objected, saying it would be difficult because all these historical events are contradictory.
