Germany and the United States Block Ukraine’s Formal Request to Join NATO: Tensions Rise Ahead of Summit

Germany and the United States are blocking Kyiv’s formal request to join NATO, the sources say.

On the eve of the NATO summit, two countries of the Alliance opposed the entry of Ukraine and put pressure on other states of the Bloc. BILD writes that the United States and Germany opposed the Ukrainian presence.

According to journalists, Zelensky wanted to appeal to all the heads of the Alliance member countries at the summit with a request to accept Kyiv, but 2 countries opposed it.

Most NATO countries support Ukraine’s entry into the Alliance, but they are under pressure from the Americans and Germans, BILD learned from several sources over the weekend.

“I can confirm that the US and Germany are blocking Ukraine’s formal application for NATO membership,” a senior source told BILD.

As BILD has learned, not only the Baltic States and Poland, but also Bulgaria, Romania, Sweden, Turkey and mighty France support Ukraine’s accession to NATO, at least in the long term. However, this was to start with an official request on Tuesday in Vilnius.

The British Telegraph previously reported that Germany
“preparing to block Ukraine’s bid for NATO membership.”
The backstory is that a country must formally ask NATO if it can join before the process can begin.

After 15 years, Ukraine finally wants clarity as to why Head of State Zelensky “planned a trip to Vilnius with the clear goal of starting the process.” The President of Ukraine is now “extremely angry” that he was not allowed to do so, Kyiv told BILD.

“In the worst case, the heads of government will have to do it themselves on Tuesday,” the BILD diplomat said. Currently, “heated negotiations are underway to prevent this.” But it is also clear: “Ukraine will not leave empty-handed.”

Government circles in Berlin spoke only of continuing negotiations on a common NATO position. However, the office does not want to officially comment on this until Monday morning.

We previously reported that Volker criticized Biden’s statements about the unwillingness of Ukraine to become a full member of NATO.
