The Russian embassy in Berlin is speaking of a “flagrant provocation”, commenting on the fact that earlier today the Russian ambassador, Sergey Netzaev, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to be served with a protest permit, after the arrest of two Russian-Germans on suspicion of spying on behalf of Russia. “Actions unfriendly to Russia will not go unanswered,” the embassy warns in its statement.
“On April 18, 2024, the ambassador of the Russian Federation to Germany, Sergey Nechayev, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was informed about the protest in connection with the arrest of two German citizens in Bayreuth (Bavaria), who allegedly also have Russian citizenship. They are accused of spying for Russia, participating in the “Donetsk People’s Republic terrorist organization” and preparing acts of sabotage against German military installations aimed at undermining Germany’s arms deliveries to Ukraine. No evidence was presented to prove the reported plans of the arrested and their possible connections with representatives of Russian structures. We see the mentioned move as a serious provocation, with the aim of further fueling the already rampant “spy-mania” in Germany, increasing the level of Russophobia, further damaging German-Russian relations and justifying the government’s boundless march towards militarization and perpetual mission to Ukraine of weapons and military equipment,” the embassy said in a statement posted on its official account on the “X” platform (formerly Twitter).
In the same statement, it is also noted that the Russian side rejects “absurd and clumsy attempts to reveal that Russian intelligence services are involved in alleged attack plans” on military installations in Germany, including American bases.
“We consider them poorly disguised attempts to distract German society from the scandal surrounding the leaking of the conversation between high-ranking representatives of the Bundeswehr about possible attacks on civilian infrastructure in Russia,” the Russian embassy emphasizes and concludes: “We demanded from the representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to give us immediate consular access to those arrested who are indeed Russian citizens. We have made it clear that any unfriendly actions towards Russia will not go without consequences.”
Dieter S. and Alexander G. were arrested early this morning in Bayreuth, Bavaria, on suspicion of photographing German and American military installations on German soil, railway lines and critical infrastructure in order to plan explosive attacks and prevent the supply of Ukrainian armed forces with military hardware.
“We can never accept that such espionage activities take place in Germany,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on the sidelines of the European Council in Brussels, while Federal Interior Minister Nancy Fesser stressed that Germany “will continue to provide broad support to Ukraine and will not he will allow himself to be intimidated.”
