Germany also imposes an entry ban for India over concerns about virus mutation | NOW

Germany is imposing an entry ban on people from India starting the night from Sunday to Monday. Only Germans who can submit a negative corona test are allowed to travel from India to their home country. They must then be in quarantine for two weeks, the German Minister of Health, Jens Spahn, announced on Saturday via Twitter.

“The newly discovered virus mutation in India is of great concern to us. In order not to jeopardize our vaccination campaign, travel from India must be significantly reduced,” said Spahn. Several countries have already decided to limit travel traffic from India.

In Germany, 25 infections with the Indian variant were known until Saturday. This mutation of the coronavirus may be more contagious than the variants that have been known in Europe for some time. The Indian variant has now also been discovered in neighboring Switzerland.

On Saturday, the United Kingdom imposed an entry ban for people from India. Indonesia and Canada have already done so. Belgium wants to be stricter on travelers because of the Indian corona virus variant. Outgoing Minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Health) said on Thursday that there will be no ban on flights from India to the Netherlands for the time being.

India is currently in the middle of a severe second corona wave, which experts say has not yet peaked. Hundreds of thousands of people are tested positive every day. Due to the many infections, the test centers cannot cope with the influx.

Hospitals are also overloaded; there are not enough medicines and beds for all seriously ill corona patients.
