Germans organize illegal tuning meeting in Lommel with 2,500 cars

A large illegal tuning meeting took place at the Lommel industrial park on Saturday evening. About 2,500 cars gathered in the Van Zon parking lot. The police arrived en masse, after which those present left in a column. There have been no major incidents.

In the late evening, the Lommel police received reports that a large group of cars had gathered in the parking lot of Horeca Van Zon. The provincial intervention plan came into effect and large numbers of police officers deployed to Lommel from various neighboring police zones.

It turned out to be a tuning meeting for which no permit had been applied for. Cars were doing donuts and fireworks were being set off, among other things. Many spectators also gathered at the two roundabouts on the Balendijk. The roundabouts were completely closed.

Quite disciplinary

“An estimated 2,500 cars have converged on and around the Van Zon parking lot, mainly from Germany,” said Lommel police chief Bart Voordeckers around 12:20 am. “The illegal tuning meeting was organized by Germans. All in all, they are quite disciplinary. When we arrived, the cars slowly started to leave. And now the Van Zon parking lot is empty again. No arrests have been made at this time.”

The exodus was largely peaceful. A long column of cars slowly drove away from the industrial estate. Among those present were speed devils and attention seekers who burst their tires near the spectators. Drones monitored the situation from the air. When the police arrived at the meeting, there were probably another 1,000 cars on their way to Lommel, in addition to the 2,500 cars present.
