Latvian designer Germans Ermić won the “Best surrealist furniture” design award of the “Wallpaper*” magazine, as well as a nomination for the final of the “Kilograms kulturas 2023” vote in the “Visual art” category for the personal exhibition “Plūstoši”, which took place last year at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, agency LETA informed Natalja Sujunšalieva, representative of the Latvian National Art Museum.
She points out that the Latvian designer Ermičs, who lives in Amsterdam, creates bright, memorable works that are known and highly valued all over the world. His artistic approach is characterized by a gradual and persistent approach to the final result, searching for new technological techniques and experimenting with colors and materials.
In 2016, “The New York Times Style Magazine” ranked Ermic among the 15 most promising young designers. He has been a finalist in the Jēras Design Parade and has won several international design awards.
Every year, the leading British interior, architecture and lifestyle magazine “Wallpaper*” nominates and awards a design award for the best surrealist interior design, including, for example, furniture, interior accessories, room lighting, in the evaluation of the competition.
Ermić already received awards from this edition in 2017, 2018 and 2021. Also this year, the artist is on the list of winners of the “Wallpaper*” award – design experts highlighted and praised his carpet collection “Tidal” (2019-2023), which was created in cooperation with the Italian carpet manufacturing brand “cc-tapis” in Milan.
The collection consists of six textile works, including the “Overflow” rug, captured in shades of violet-pink colors, and the “Retreat” rug, captured in a blue-green range. On the other hand, the carpet “Chroma Radiate” together with the sketches was recently on display in Riga, at Ermić’s exhibition “Flūstoši”. All carpets in the Tidal collection are hand-woven in Nepal from Himalayan sheep wool, and each square meter of carpet is made up of around 125,000 individual knots of mesh threads.
The exhibition at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, which took place last year, became Ermičs’s first solo exhibition in Latvia. The project collected the author’s most significant achievements – works in textile, glass, marble and other materials, introducing the versatility of creative interests. Thanks to the response of the designer, the LNMM design collection has now been supplemented by one of the carpets from the “Tidal” collection exhibited at the time – the 2019 work “Chroma Radiate”.
