German Women’s National Team: Sensational Victories and the Evolution of Women’s Football

For its sensational victories at the Women’s World Cup in 2004 and 2007, the German team was not only celebrated by female fans in its home country. Before the upcoming World Cup, which begins on July 20, 2023 with the opening game New Zealand – Norway in Auckland, New Zealand, the German team is motivated and confident of victory. In an interview with the German edition of “Playboy”, Sophia Kleinherne (23), defender of the German national team, explained her view of the gap that still exists between women’s and men’s football.

“The European Championship allowed us to show what we are now capable of”

Referring to the last European Women’s Football Championship last year, she said: “I don’t think many people have noticed how women’s football has developed in recent years. Many still had the image of women’s football from 20 years ago in their heads . Through the European Championship we were able to show what we are now capable of.”

Sophia Kleinherne would like more focus on sport

She no longer sees any basis for the widespread argument that men have better football to offer in terms of technology and quality. Anyone who thinks otherwise should look again at the exciting Champions League final between Wolfsburg and Barcelona last June.

“Such games, dramatic and at the highest level, are no longer isolated cases,” she explained. “The people who continue to criticize women’s football are simply looking through completely the wrong glasses – or not looking at all and simply judging from antiquated prejudices.” Comparisons with men should generally be “just left out”, according to Kleinherne. “You don’t do that in other sports either. I wish that you just watch football.”

‘I don’t know of any female Neymar’

The fact that, according to a survey, 52 percent of those surveyed find the German women’s national soccer team more likeable than the men’s is explained by the fact that women’s soccer is more approachable and also more honest for the fans.

In contrast to certain male soccer stars, female soccer players would do less acting on the pitch: “I don’t know of any female Neymar. For example, I don’t know any player who stays down for two or three minutes. Seriously: I would say that we really put our hearts into every second of the game – and even when we lost, we can never be accused of not having given our all.”

There is a lot of passion in the national team. “We not only expect the spectators to be there for us, we are also there for them,” said the professional footballer.

The August issue of “Playboy” will be published on July 13, 2023.
