A German woman has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for her role in the death of a five-year-old girl in Iraq. Jennifer W. had joined the terrorist movement Islamic State (IS) and had enslaved the child together with her husband.

W. was sentenced in the first instance to ten years in prison for the crimes she committed in 2015. A higher court found her guilty of crimes against humanity and enslavement resulting in death and imposed a higher sentence.

The five-year-old girl belonged to the Yazidis, a Kurdish-speaking religious minority that has been the victim of many IS crimes. The child died of dehydration. She was chained outside in the blazing sun by W. and her husband as punishment. W. has confessed that she did nothing to help the child.

The court also blames W. for how she dealt with the mother after the child had died. She put a gun to the woman’s head to force her to stop crying, causing serious psychological damage.

W.’s former husband is serving a life sentence for genocide.
