The German Weather Service is currently warning of storms. In parts of the Rhine-Main area there may be wind gusts of the first warning level.
Frankfurt – It’s getting uncomfortable in the Rhine-Main area. At least that’s what a current weather warning from the German Weather Service (DWD) tells us. Accordingly, there is a risk of squalls in the region on Saturday (November 18th) and Sunday (November 19th).
The experts from Offenbach divide warnings of strong winds into four categories.
Warning level 1 | Gusts of wind |
Warning level 2 | Gales and severe squalls |
Warning level 3 | Hurricane-like gusts and gale-force winds |
Warning level 4 | Extreme hurricane force winds |
DWD publishes official weather warning for the Rhine-Main area
The DWD describes air movements over 50 km/h (wind force 7) as gusts of wind. At warning level 2 there are squalls of 65 to 89 km/h (wind forces 8 to 9). Heavy gusts of wind reach speeds of 90 to 104 km/h (wind force 10). Hurricane-like gusts in warning level 3 are 105 to 119 km/h (wind force 11); Hurricane gusts from 120 km/h (wind force 12) are also classified in warning level 3. Warning level 4 with extreme hurricane gusts is issued from 140 km/h (regionally).
Current weather warning of squalls in Rhine-Main
A level 1 weather warning is currently in effect for parts of the Rhine-Main area. “There are wind gusts with speeds between 50 km/h (14 m/s, 28 kn, Bft 7) and 60 km/h (17 m/s, 33 kn, Bft 7) initially from the south, later from the southwest. In exposed locations, gusts of up to 70 km/h (20 m/s, 38 kn, Bft 8) must be expected,” says the DWD.
The current weather warning affects the following districts:
- Hochtaunuskreis
- Main-Taunus district
- Limburg-Weilburg district
The current weather warning for the Rhine-Main area is valid until Sunday morning at 9 a.m. However, this can be adjusted at any time by the experts in Offenbach – or extended if in doubt.
The DWD was founded in 1952 and is the meteorological service of the Federal Republic of Germany. Among other things, its tasks include meteorological security for air and sea shipping and warning of meteorological events “that can be dangerous to public safety and order”. This is also the case in the current case in parts of the Rhine-Main area. (esa)
