German Troops Sent to Australia: Berlin’s Shift to the Indo-Pacific Region

Berlin

German for the first time will send hundreds of troops to the region Australia. Berlin’s deployment of troops is part of a joint exercise with around 30,000 troops from 12 other countries, including Indonesia.

On the other hand, it is considered rare to send military troops to Australia as well as underlining Germany’s shift of focus to the Indo-Pacific region amid increasing tensions with China in the region. Thus as reported ReutersMonday (10/7/2023).

In recent years, Berlin has had a bigger military presence in the Indo-Pacific region, although this has also meant the European nation is in a tight spot between security and economic interests.

“This is a very important area for us in Germany, and also for the European Union because of its economic dependence,” the Commander of the Army, German Lieutenant General Alfons Mais, told Reuters in an interview released Monday (10/7) local time.

The interview was released hours before the first batch of German troops left for Australia.

Mais said that up to 240 German troops, including 170 paratroopers and 40 marines, will participate in the joint exercise named Talisman Saber scheduled for July 22 to August 4.

The joint exercise is the largest between Australia and Australia United States of America (USA), which is held twice a year.
