German Tourists Suspected of Vandalizing Vasari Corridor in Florence, Italy with Graffiti

Two German tourists are suspected of having covered the Vasari Corridor in Florence, Italy, with graffiti. The 460-year-old structure, which attracts many tourists, was sprayed with a football-related text this week.

‘DKS 1860’. This has been written in black letters on the Vasari Corridor, a structure along the Arno River in Florence, since this week. The arch construction, which you can walk under, is located near the Uffizi museum in the Italian city.

The black letters refer to a football club from the German city of Munich. Police suspect two German tourists aged 20 and 21 of having spray-painted the text on the pillars of the structure, writes CNN.

Officers were able to identify the two from video footage. During a search of a holiday home, where eleven German tourists were staying at the time, spray paint and paint-stained clothing were found.

The fingerprints on the paint cans are compared with the fingerprints of the eleven Germans. In this way, the police want to find out who all is involved in the vandalism.

The Italian Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, confirms that a German pair is suspected. He says a total of 10,000 euros is needed to remove the paint from the structure, which is over 1 kilometer long and was created by Renaissance artist and architect Giorgio Vasari.

It is not the first time this summer that tourists have destroyed historic buildings in Italy. In June, a man scratched his name into a wall of the Colosseum in Rome. He apologized and said he was not aware that the structure is that old.
