German Teachers Association President Initiates Debate on School Response to Russian Threat and Security Changes

The President of the German Teachers’ Association, Stefan Düll, has initiated a debate about how schools should react to the changed security architecture and the Russian threat. “Schoolyards are not roll call areas,” Düll told “Bild” (Saturday edition). “But schools are places where we teach our children and young people the values of democracy and freedom.”

This must then include “an honest discussion of the need for a defensive democracy both internally and externally”. That also meant “presenting the current threat situation,” said Düll. “There is already a discussion in schools about what Defense Minister Pistorius means by the term ‘war-ready’. The question of compulsory military service is also being discussed.”

The “decades of peace” should also remain a matter of course for future generations, he explained. This requires “the willingness to take serious deterrence”. It is also a matter of course that youth officers from the Bundeswehr visit the schools here, says Düll.

“It needs to be checked whether the curricula need to be sharpened with regard to threats, geostrategy and defense preparedness.”
